A former lead smelter worker has filed suit against Gopher Resource on behalf of his young son alleging that the company’s dangerous and dusty work environment resulted in the boy being exposed to the neurotoxin.

Hundreds of workers at a Tampa lead smelter have been exposed to dangerous levels of neurotoxins. The consequences have been profound.

The Tampa Bay Times spent 18 months investigating chemical exposure at a Tampa factory, the only lead smelter in Florida. Hundreds of factory workers have been exposed to extreme amounts of lead.

“They’ve inhaled it, been burned by it, been covered in it. And no one has stopped it” – the gripping Times articles announces to its readers.

It was discovered that Gopher failed to prevent the plaintiff from carrying toxic dust home and exposing his son, who was just an infant, when he first recorded a blood-lead level. The boy has since suffered from disability and emotional distress because of his exposure, according to the lawsuit.

Air-lead readings inside some parts of the plant were regularly hundreds of times the federal limit, and many workers wore respirators that were not strong enough to adequately protect them.

The lawsuit is the latest fallout after a Tampa Bay Times investigation published in March found that hundreds of workers at Gopher were exposed to dangerous levels of lead and other chemicals.
