Woman Suffers Extensive Burns In Pressure Cooker Explosion

PressureCooker

A Tennessee woman has filed a lawsuit against Boca Raton company Sunbeam after she says her pressure cooker exploded causing her severe burn injuries. According to the lawsuit, the woman suffered severe burn injuries due to the fact that the lid was allowed to move while the contents were pressurized.

For those who slept through chemistry, pressure and heat are virtually indistinct concepts both related to the concept of kinetic energy. The hotter something is, the fast its molecules move. Hence, heat can be created by placing contents under pressure. When this happens, the molecules start moving faster and become hotter. It’s a smart system when it works correctly. When it fails, a pressure cooker can spew boiling hot contents across a room. Modern pressure cookers have safety features that prevent the lid from being moved while the contents of the pot are under pressure. When that feature fails, the result is something like the story you see above.

The same company, Sunbeam, was recently ordered by the Consumer Products Safety Commission to recall over 900,000 pressure cookers over similar problems after receiving 119 reports of similar injuries. The offending product is known as the “Crock-Pot Express Crock Multicooker.”

Design Defect Lawsuits

There are three types of product liability cases: Those that allege a design flaw, a manufacturing error, and a failure to warn about a dangerous feature. In this case, the plaintiffs are alleging that the crockpot was designed defectively making it too easy for individuals who were operating the crockpot as expected and directed to remove the lid and depressurize the crockpot rapidly. Further, the plaintiffs maintain that even an astute user of the crockpot may become convinced that the contents have been depressurized and try to remove the lid. The plaintiffs contend that this creates an unreasonable risk to customers.

Pressure Cooker Injuries and Damages

Essentially, you have scalding hot food flying into your face. So it isn’t good. Those who have had major pressure cooker accidents report first-, second-, and third-degree burns to their face. In some cases, this can result in blindness. In other cases, it can result in severe disfigurement. Pressure cooker injuries tend to be severe, and claims filed against pressure cooker manufacturers tend to result in large settlements.

The largest personal injury settlements are the result of permanent disability. Those who suffer facial disfigurement, blindness, or other cataclysmic injuries deserve to be compensated for that loss. Given the severe reduction to their quality of life, that compensation should be handsome.
