TikTok Users Blame Old Spice For Chemical Burns

Two TikTok users are accusing corporate giant Procter & Gamble of producing Old Spice deodorant which caused chemical burns to their armpits. While no lawsuit has been announced in relation to chemical burn claims, Procter & Gamble is facing a class-action over the presence of benzene, a known carcinogen, in their spray deodorant products. The plaintiffs claim that the presence of benzene offers no benefit and is dangerous to customers.

Benzene lawsuits are quite popular right now. A number of cosmetic companies are facing allegations that benzene caused possible cancers and other health complications. The plaintiffs contend that the presence of benzene renders the product “unfit for use.” A recent study appears to indicate the presence of benzene in a wide array of consumer hygiene and cosmetic companies.

While benzene is a dangerous chemical, it is not known to cause chemical burns. Instead, it causes the skin to dry out and degrease leading to cracking and peeling. Old Spice has been accused of causing “chemical burns” in the past. It is unclear, however, if that is the correct terminology to use for these symptoms or if benzene is to blame for the symptoms suffered by the TikTok users.

Other Old Spice lawsuits 

Another “chemical burn” lawsuit was filed in New York alleging that Old Spice caused skin rashes in a number of users. At least one hundred customers have complained about chemical burns in their armpits after using the product. The location of the burns makes it more likely than not that the Old Spice brand is responsible for the skin irritation. However, it is unknown if some folks have an allergic reaction or if their skin is hypersensitive.

In this case, the plaintiff went to Old Spice’s website to research the matter and was told that there was no risk of skin irritation. The presence of benzene, which is known to dehydrate skin, would indicate that is untrue.

Injuries, while not necessarily life-threatening, certainly could turn out to be life-threatening if cancers develop due to blood poisoning from the benzene. Blood cancers are known complications of the chemical. Since the chemical dehydrates the skin causing it to crack and peel, the risk of contamination is greater in those that do experience rashes. Procter & Gamble is accused of failing to warn customers about the presence of a known carcinogen or skin rashes that can occur due to the presence of benzene.

The class-action lawsuit is still waiting for court approval. Once the class has been approved, which appears likely, more litigants will be able to join the lawsuit against the manufacturer.
