Dog Breeds You Should be Aware Of

All types of dogs are capable of inflicting serious injury to adults, elderly persons and children. However, certain breeds have larger teeth and more powerful jaws. If a dog attacks you or your family member, it is important to seek prompt medical attention. In addition to the immediate physical injury you sustain, you may be exposed to a serious infection, or even rabies.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in five dog bites causes an injury serious enough to require medical attention. In 2012, the CDC reported that 27,000 people underwent reconstructive surgery as a result of dog bites. To avoid being bitten by any dog, never approach an unfamiliar animal and never pet a dog before first allowing it to sniff you.

All dogs are different and temperament depends on a number of factors; treatment by the owner, obedience training, exercise, diet and comfort around humans all play a role. The following breeds, however, are recognized by the CDC as contributing to a high number of violent incidents:

  • Pit bull — Worldwide, the pit bull is treated as a dangerous breed. Recently, on March 14, 2014 in Bunnell, Florida, a pit bull jumped through the window of a minivan and attacked two children. This particular breed has an especially powerful jaw that is capable of tearing through tissue with ease and even damaging bone.

  • Rottweiler — The CDC found that the Rottweiler, responsible for 39 fatalities from 1979-1998, was the second most dangerous dog breed. Large, powerful and aggressive, the Rottweiler is often used by law enforcement and security agencies.

  • German Shepherd — The German shepherd is prized by security agencies and militaries around the world for its high intelligence. However, the same characteristics that make this breed excellent as a guard dog also make it dangerous to children and the public, especially when startled or threatened.

Dog attacks are terrifying. If you or someone you love sustains a bite injury from an unprovoked or unrestrained dog in Tampa, consider taking legal action with help from an attorney.
