Be on the Lookout for These Common Signs of Nursing Home Abuse

Too often, we see instances of nursing home workers being poorly trained, overworked and underpaid. As a result, it’s perhaps no surprise that there is a high occurrence of nursing home abuse and neglect throughout the country. Unfortunately, it sometimes requires a lawsuit before management actually does anything about it.

If you have started to suspect that your loved one is suffering from abuse, the following are some signs to watch for that could confirm your suspicions:

  • Signs of physical abuse. Unexplained cuts, bruises, bumps and abrasions could indicate that there is physical abuse occurring in your loved one’s nursing home, whether it’s coming from the staff or from other residents. Victims may also become withdrawn or scared of their surroundings, yet are afraid to say anything about it out of fear that their abuser will find out and punish them for speaking up.
  • Signs of emotional abuse. Emotional abuse could include threats, insults and public humiliation of the victim. Often, victims of emotional abuse in nursing homes become sullen and depressed, or start behaving strangely. In some cases, emotional abuse could include a trusted friend or relative taking advantage of the victim legally or financially. If you suspect this to be the case, be on the lookout for strange financial transactions, changes to estate plans or one person spending an unusual amount of alone time with your loved one.
  • Signs of neglect. Occasionally, nursing home staffs simply do not give their residents the attention they need to keep them happy and healthy. Signs of neglect include sudden, unexplained weight fluctuations, soiled or stained clothing or sheets, infections, hair loss, bad smells, bedsores, listlessness and withdrawal.

If you notice any of these signs and believe your loved one may have been the victim of abuse in a nursing home facility, speak with a compassionate Tampa personal injury lawyer at the Matassini Law Firm, P.A. Call us at 813.379.2007 or contact us online today.
